Around Avonlea’s Green Gables

1. Have students read Anne of Green Gables and look at pictures of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Ask someone who has seen this beautiful island to tell the class about it.
2. Students list and sketch the island’s geographical features. They will find red soil, blossoming trees, sandy shores, and brilliant blue sky and sea all described in the book.
3. Students cover their art area with recycled newspaper. On construction paper, use Crayola Washable Paints and Brushes to recreate the landscape. Air-dry the paint.
4. Students bunch up bits of tissue paper. Glue them to the painting to represent foliage and other textured features. Students look at the images of PEI that their classmates created. How are they similar? Different?

VA: Use art materials and tools in a safe and responsible manner.

VA: Know how the differences among visual characteristics and purposes of art in order to convey ideas.

Using Crayola Water Colors, students can paint a landscape of Prince Edward Island, including landforms found there, using the same artistic techniques as in their initial artwork assignment.

Students can write additional adventures for Anne, the main character in this story. Students may want to introduce themselves as a character in the new story and describe their relationship(s) with Anne. How will the geographic features of Prince Edward Island play a role in your new story? Accompany writing with sketches completed using Crayola Colored Pencils and/or water color paint.

Students can imagine an imaginary land they would like to visit. What landforms will be present in your new land? How will these features impact your life?

Research Prince Edward Island to discover its history, as well as the natural resources the island has to offer. What type of government guides this territory? How does it differ from yours? What types of business flourish here? If you were looking to move, would this be a possible new home for you? Could you get a job here doing something you are interested in?
