Happy Valen-Dine's Day!
Design colorful cards—for Valentine’s Day or any special occasion. Send heart-y greetings using the contemporary art techniques of pop-artist Jim Dine.
1. Artist Jim Dine lives in Ohio. Among his popular series of paintings and sculptures are his Hearts. Dine’s series usually contain an appealing interplay of shadow and light between the main object and the background. This effect, combined with Dine's interesting surfaces, make his works a pleasure to see.
2. Jim Dine was heavily influenced by the Pop-Art movement, which draws its inspiration from everyday objects. His other series include tools, bathrobes, and skulls.
3. To create your own Heart series, hold a sheet of white paper vertically. Fold it into three equal vertical columns. Open the sheet, then fold it into four equal horizontal columns. You will have 12 boxes.
4. Use Crayola® Scissors to cut three or more hearts from squares of other paper that is the same size as any of your 12 boxes. Make each of the hearts slightly different.
5. Trace the hearts into the bottom six boxes on the folded paper. Alternate the different hearts.
6. Use Crayola Oil Pastels to color in each of the hearts. Use a variety of colors.
7. Cover your art area with newspaper. With Crayola Watercolor Brushes, fill in each box with a different combination of Crayola Watercolors. Make sure the watercolors contrast slightly with the hearts for increased visibility. Use a damp paintbrush to blend background colors around the boxes. Air dry flat.
8. Fold the card. Write your heartfelt message inside with Crayola Erasable Colored Pencils. You’ll delight someone with this colorful greeting card!
Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.

Scissors—ATTENTION: The cutting edges of scissors are sharp and care should be taken whenever cutting or handling. Blunt-tip scissors should be used only by children 4 years and older. Pointed-tip scissors should be used only by children 6 years and older.

- Students research the work of various pop artists, and compare and contrast it to the work of Jim Dine.
