Safety First
Create posters to show why taking safety precautions seriously is serious business.
1. Work in groups to brainstorm safety rules everyone needs to follow: at home, at school, in very hot or cold weather, in case of fire, or while playing outside, eating, riding in cars, or interacting with animals. Pick one safety rule that you think is very important.
2. With Crayola® Washable Markers, divide a piece of poster board or large construction paper in half. On one half, create a poster image of a real or imaginary creature who has not followed this rule or is thinking about breaking it. Demonstrate in your image what is likely to happen when safety rules are not followed. How can the posture and face on the rule-breaker express emotions that match the consequence?
3. Write a safety reminder in the other half of your poster. Display in a safety gallery as a reminder to other children.
Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.
- Use Crayola Model Magic and craft materials (craft sticks, toothpicks) to model the figures on the poster. Add color with markers. Create safety plays and puppet shows to present to another class.
- Younger children draw pictures of dinosaurs breaking school safety rules established by the class. Add the child artists' words to the artwork or encourage invented spellings.
- Assemble children's pictures into a book. Refer to the collection when rules are being stretched. Children take the book home to share with family members.
