Step 1 Identify parents to translate meeting announcements and information.

Step 2 Appeal to parents' desire to see their children succeed in school.

Step 3 Respect family's native language skills as well as their emerging skills in English.

Step 4 Get to know community services offered to support limited-English families.

Step 5 Provide recent immigrants with a guide to the new school and community.

Step 6 Send a personal welcome and invitation, if possible in the family's language, to meetings and parent involvement opportunities.

Step 7 Provide child care and transportation for meetings, conferences, and other parent involvement functions.

Step 8 Plan class or school-wide events which engage families and urge them to share their cultural heritage, customs, recipes and music with the school.
