Spark creativity with Crayola lesson plans. With hundreds of activities, the learning possibilities are endless.

Across the Land

Students will explore the types of landforms found in the country and create a book that illustrates them.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Ask students to imagine that they are birds flying over the country. What sorts of landforms would they see? Ask them to list some that they know, such as mountains, rivers, lakes, islands, glaciers, canyons, mesas, or any others. Have them learn how landforms are created, such as by earthquakes, weathering, erosion, or mineral deposits. Then ask them to research landforms that can be found in their region or country.

  • Step 2

Have students create a book that depicts a few of the landforms they researched. They can draw the front and back covers on construction paper, then illustrate each landform on separate pieces of paper. Ask them to label each landform and describe what it is and where it would be found.

  • Step 3

When the pages are complete, have the students put holes along the sides of the paper with a hole punch. Make sure they line up the pages while doing this so the holes align. Then have them thread and tie pieces of string or yarn to join the pages.

  • Step 4

Display the books on a table or shelf, where students can look through them and use them as a resource to learn about the landforms in their area.

Standards

SCI: Ask questions about the features of phenomena observed and conclusions drawn from investigations or models.

SCI: Design pictorial or graphic representations/models that are useful in communicating ideas.

Adaptations

Create a landform concentration-style card game. Have students illustrate a landform on one unlined index card and write its name and a couple of facts about it on another card. Make several sets for a variety of landforms, perhaps volcano, mountain, island, lake, etc. Shuffle the cards and place them face down. Have students take turns flipping over two cards. If they pick the picture and its written description they keep the pair. If not, the cards are turned over and the next student takes a turn.

Wetlands are landforms found along waterways and floodplains that come in all shapes and sizes. Examples include swamps, marshes, bogs, and others. They act to filter water and provide flood and erosion control. Have students learn about their various uses and benefits. They might visit a website such as oceanservice.noaa.gov or sciencetrek.org and watch a short video about wetlands.
