Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Facing challenges and making good choices are necessary skills for students as they learn to navigate life. These skills help them boost their independence, develop resilience as they learn from mistakes and persevere, and build confidence and adaptability, to name a few. Designing games stimulates students' brains, enhances creativity, and creates memorable learning. Have students think about immediate and future goals they'd like to achieve. Ask them to think about the steps they need to get there and the challenges and choices they'll have to face along the way.

  • Step 2

Have students form into small groups and challenge them to create a board game relating to life goals and the paths to achieving them. Ask them to think about the components of other games they enjoy and incorporate elements such as challenge cards, obstacle cards, rewards, penalties, etc.

  • Step 3

When the game's objectives and rules are established, have students design a game board on poster board and then embellish it with cut-outs or drawings. They can create the game pieces out of Model Magic and use plain paper to create cards.

  • Step 4

Now they can play the game! Ask students to share their games with other teams and solicit feedback about them.

Standards

SEL: Responsible Decision-Making: Learn how to make a reasoned judgment after analyzing information, data, and acts. Identify solutions for personal and social problems.

Adaptations

Challenge students to design and create another game related to a different theme, such as environmental sustainability or promoting equality.

Invite a social worker or mental health counselor to talk to the class about ways to achieve life skills such as making good decisions, fostering self-conficence, boosting creativity, etc.
