Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

  • Craft Materials
  • Recycled Cardboard Box
  • Recycled Cardboard Roll
  • Recycled File Folders

Steps

  • Step 1

The International Building Code (IBC) dictates the standards that architects, engineers, and builders must follow when constructing a new building or renovating an existing one in order to safeguard the public health, safety, and general welfare of the occupants. It also includes a mandate that buildings and facilities must be constructed to be accessible to people with disabilities. Have students research some of the areas it addresses such as maximum occupancy, sprinkler systems, means of egress. Students should research accommodations set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

  • Step 2

Ask students to think about a facility they would like to design, then have them form groups according to the type of facility chosen. If it's a football stadium, how much space will be needed for the field? If it's a concert hall, how much space is needed on the stage to accommodate a full orchestra and what are the acoustic requirements? How many occupants can the venue safely serve? How many exits must there be? How many restrooms should be provided? What food concessions should be planned?

  • Step 3

Have the student groups create a model of their design. They can use a recycled box and any other recycled material or craft items as necessary to convey their vision.

  • Step 4

Have the groups present their models to the class and talk about what they designed, how they envisioned it, and what they learned about safe and accessible building practices.

Standards

SS: Production, Distribution, and Consumption: Consider consequences of individual decisions on groups, communities, the nation, and beyond.

SS: Power, Authority, and Governance: Develop awareness of rights and responsibilities of people, in specific contexts.

SEL: Responsible Decision-Making: Consider ethical standards and safety concerns, and evaluate the benefits and consequences of various actions for personal, social, and collective well-being.

Adaptations

Invite a local engineer or architect to speak to the class about the process of building a structure from conception to completion.

Have student groups create an original logo and an ad for the facility they created. They could design a print ad or write a script for an advertisement.
