Alphabet Art

Students practice their alphabet and phonics skills by creating art with letters.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Sing or recite the alphabet song as a class. You may want to point to the letters on the board as you recite them.

  • Step 2

Ask children to choose a letter to illustrate and have them draw a large version of it in the center of a piece of construction paper using markers. Then have them illustrate the page by repeating the letter in crayon in smaller versions around the central one. Encourage upper- and lowercase usage.

  • Step 3

Students might want to create several drawings using different letters, particularly the letters in their names.

  • Step 4

Have students come to the front of the class to present their drawings. Have them name the letters and point out the uppercase and lowercase versions. See if the rest of the class can come up with words that start with that letter.

Standards

LA: Add drawings or other visual displays to written text to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

LA: Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.

Adaptations

Have children write the first letter of a word that represents them--either their name or something they are proud of in the center of a piece of paper. Ask them to illustrate the rest of the page with things they like or activities they enjoy and then present it to the class.

Assign the full alphabet to children, with each child drawing the letter or letters they were assigned. Challenge them to find partners whose letters could form a word with their own. Have them stand next to each other at the front of the class to spell out the word.
