Beasty Books

Let students go wild filling their brains and their Beasty Books with fun facts about amazing animals.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Ask students about animals they would like to learn more about. Help them find information about the chosen animal. Where does it live? What does it eat? How big does it grow? Then help them find a picture of the animal.

  • Step 2

Have students draw an animal onto a piece of construction paper and cut it out. This will be used as the cover of the book. Next have them trace this shape several more times onto other pieces of construction paper. They will cut these out to use as the pages of the book. Have them illustrate the book's cover.

  • Step 3

Ask students to write an illustrated story that includes facts about the animal on the pages of the book. To complete the publication they should include their name as the author and illustrator on the title page, then staple the pages of the book together.

  • Step 4

Invite students to present their book to the class and talk about why they chose their particular animal.

Standards

LA: Add drawings or other visual displays to written text to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

SCI: Design pictorial or graphic representations/models that are useful in communicating ideas.

Adaptations

Have students form pairs or small groups and create a play featuring their animals that they will act out for the class.

Challenge students to write a short poem about their animal, perhaps incorporating the sounds made by the animal.
