Coordinate Plane Geometry

Students will learn about coordinate geometry and create a colorful creation using ordered pairs.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

An ordered pair in coordinate geometry is used to represent the position of a point on a coordinate plane - two perpendicular intersecting lines of which the horizontal is the x-axis and the vertical is the y-axis. The axes will have graduated numbers on them. Display an image of this configuration and explain that in a pair such as (2,4) the first number refers to the x-axis and the second refers to the y-axis.

  • Step 2

Ask students to draw a coordinate plane using a ruler to create the lines and add graduations (a set of markings used to depict measurement). Ask students to draw a shape by arranging dots on the plane and then using a ruler to draw lines to connect the dots. Have them create a list of ordered pairs that represent where each dot was placed. Ask students to create a design inside the shape they created.

  • Step 3

Have students swap their lists of ordered pairs with another classmate and ask this partner to recreate the shape and add a design to it.

Standards

MATH: Analyze, compare, create, and compose math ideas using written, oral, and drawn lines, shapes, forms, and patterns.

MATH: Create models that demonstrate math concepts and attend to precision.

MATH: Include knowledge of mathematics habits of mind and operations in writing, speaking, and artifact/model production.

Adaptations

Give students a list of ordered pairs and have them plot them on a coordinate plane.

Challenge students to create grid art using graph paper. Have them draw out a design of their choice, whether abstract or representational, list the ordered pairs used to create it, and then fill in the image.
