Lots of Dot Fun

What can you make out of dots? Children get creative with counting.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Give each student a strip of 10 dot stickers. Ask them to plan how they will use all 10 in art. Then have them design a picture that uses the dots. Perhaps a snowman with 2 dots for the eyes and 4 rows of 2 buttons? Or a person wearing a coat with 10 polka dots? Or a Dalmatian with 10 spots (would we see 5 on this side and 5 on the back of the paper)?

  • Step 2

Have the children outline a drawing in crayon and then attach the dots in the appropriate places. Then have them fill in the drawing using watercolors.

  • Step 3

Ask the children to present their drawings and note how many dots they used in each area. Discuss sets of two, and basic addition such as two eyes plus how many buttons?

Standards

MATH: Create models that demonstrate math concepts and attend to precision.

Adaptations

Read a counting book such as "Mouse Count" by Ellen Stoll Walsh or "Dinner at the Panda Palace" by Stephanie Calmenson and Nadine Bernard Wescott.

Challenge students to create subtraction art. If they don't use all 10 dots, how many are left and what would that equation look like with math symbols written on the art?
