Klee's Castle Shapes

Young children will combine shapes and color to create Klee-inspired art.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Show children an image of Paul Klee's painting "Castle and Sun." Ask them to identify some of the shapes and colors in the artwork. Explain that this painting is an example of the cubism art style in which images are often represented by geometric shapes. Tell them that they will all now be cubist artists as they paint their own Klee-inspired castle.

  • Step 2

Have children use watercolors to paint various shapes to create a castle. When the paint is dry ask them to color in the shapes with crayons.

  • Step 3

Have students present their paintings and discuss how many different variations were created by the class.

Standards

ARTS: Explore and invent art-making techniques and approaches.

ARTS: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.

MATH: Describe, compare, quantify, and classify objects by attributes. Sort objects into categories.

Adaptations

Encourage students to make up a story about their castle painting. Who lives there? What do they do? Who are their friends? Do they have a pet dog? Cat? Dragon?

Have students build a castle out of Model Magic or Air-Dry Clay. Encourage them to draw a background setting for it.
