Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Review the concept of synonyms with the class. Have students come up with various words and some of their synonyms. Take the class outside on a nice day and find a safe and appropriate area for a sidewalk chalk-based game.

  • Step 2

Draw a large circle and divide it into equal wedges. Have students take turns standing in the center. Ask another student to call out a word, then have the student in the center write that word in one of the wedges as well as a synonym for the word. Then have all the students act out the words that were written.

  • Step 3

After the circle's wedges are full, go around the circle again and have students take turns coming up with additional synonyms for the core words that were written. They could write their words in smaller font than is shown in the image, either inside the wedges or outside the circle, so that all the words the students came up with are documented.

Standards

LA: Add drawings or other visual displays to written text to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

LA: Distinguish shades of meaning among closely related verbs (e.g., toss, throw, hurl) and closely related adjectives (e.g., thin, slender, skinny, scrawny).

Adaptations

Read a book such as "Thesaurus Rex" by Laya Steinberg and Debbie Harter or "Stroll and Walk, Babble and Talk" by Brian P. Cleary and Brian Gable. Have students point out words and their synonyms in the book and perhaps come up with other synonyms of their own.

Play the same outdoor sidewalk chalk game, but this time using antonyms.
