Restore and Revitalize

Are there run-down areas in your community that could be revitalized to benefit the people who live there? Students will work in teams to design a community restoration project.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Have students discuss areas that may be run down or in need of restoration in your community. Have them form teams to brainstorm ways the area could be transformed into a communal space, perhaps a playground, bicycle path, community garden, walking trail, or something else.

  • Step 2

Ask each team to pick one of their ideas and then collaboratively design a model of the space using recycled materials, colored pencils, and Model Magic. They can begin by turning a recycled shoebox or other small box on its side, then decorating the background. They can then sculpt features out of Model Magic and add other embellishments using decorated paper cut-outs.

  • Step 3

Have each team present their community restoration model to an organization that could grant permission and help their vision become reality. They might meet with city planners, the parks commission, or county commissioners to describe the current condition, what their restoration vision is, and how revitalizing this area would benefit residents.

Standards

SS: People, Places, and Environments: Understand various perspectives and examine changes in relationships between peoples, places, and environments.

SS: Individuals, Groups, and Institutions: Examine various institutions that affect one’s life and influence people’s thinking and how they advocate for ideas they believe in.

Adaptations

Have students create posters to gain support for their plan from community members. Encourage them to ask local businesses, libraries, and office buildings to display the posters that show their vision for restoration and a way people can volunteer to help.

Encourage students to explore opportunities to volunteer in their community, perhaps helping to remove litter from public parks, weed public gardens, stock food pantries, etc.
