Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Research shows that sitting for long periods of time is associated with certain health risks such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and depression. Standing up at least once every hour can go a long way to combat the negative effects of sitting. Have students think about ways to accomplish this. For example, they might suggest taking a short walk after completing an assignment or a meal, standing up periodically while reading, walking around while talking on the phone, etc.

  • Step 2

Ask students to use Model Magic to sculpt a figurine of themselves in a standing or walking position. They can apply Colors of the World markers, which provide a variety of skin tones, to their sculpture. They could experiment with various ways of showing movement in a stationary sculpture while the modeling material is wet.

  • Step 3

Have students present their art and discuss the position they depicted and some of the things they learned about combatting the harmful effects of being sedentary.

Standards

SCI: Convey designs through sketches, detailed drawings, or physical models to communicate ideas and solutions.

SCI: Understand that events have causes, sometimes simple and sometimes multifaceted.

Adaptations

Have students set up a Fitness Day or contribute a booth to the school's field day or seasonal fair to promote the importance of getting up to move and exercise periodically.

Have the class design a routine to combat the effects of sitting for long periods. Ask them to come up with short activities that they can engage in briefly every hour. Suggestions might include doing knee bends or toe touches, walking around the room once or twice, dancing in place, or anything else.
