Story Tapestries

Retell a story by creating a fabric collage.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Have students read or listen to a story that contains a clear sequence of events, such as "The Emperor's New Clothes" or "The Ugly Duckling" by Hans Christian Andersen. Discuss the chain of events and the message of the story.

  • Step 2

Ask students to form small groups and have each group choose a scene from the story to depict in a collaborative fabric collage. Make sure each scene will be represented. Have them use fabric scraps, craft items, and markers to create their portion of the scene.

  • Step 3

Arrange each group's contribution to the tapestry in sequential order. Then have each team present a dramatization of their scene in the order of the story.

Standards

LA: Add drawings or other visual displays to written text to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

LA: Analyze how and why individuals, events, or ideas develop and interact over the course of a story.

LA: Describe how characters in a story respond to major events, challenges, and other characters.

Adaptations

Challenge students to write an original story that could teach a life lesson.

Ask students to illustrate a proverb, such as "All that glitters is not gold" or "Don't count your chickens before they hatch." Have them present their illustrations and talk about what the saying means.
