Stylized Art

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Stylized art refers to depicting an object not as a realistic representation, but by simplifying and exaggerating features and using non-naturalistic colors to create a specific mood or aesthetic. Have students look at some examples of stylized art and learn about some of the artists known for working in this style. Some suggestions might be works by Pablo Picasso's "Femme au Chien" (1953), Keith Haring's "Love" (1989, or Salvador Dalí's "The Persistence of Memory" (1931).

  • Step 2

Ask students to choose an object to depict in a stylized manner. Encourage them to use simplified or exaggerated proportions, bold lines, and bright colors.

  • Step 3

Have students present their stylized art and explain the technique they used to create it.

Standards

ARTS: Speculate about processes an artist uses to create a work of art.

ARTS: Explore and invent art-making techniques and approaches.

Adaptations

Ask students to create a realistic drawing of the same object they depicted in their stylized art. Display the two side by side and discuss how the mood and aesthetic compares and contrasts in each.

A caricature is a drawing that shows features of its subject, usually a person, in a simplified or exaggerated way. Have students look at some of the drawings by Al Hirschfeld, who is best known for his caricature portraits of film and Broadway celebrities. Incorporated in all his drawings is the name of his daughter, Nina. Challenge students to find the hidden name.
