Numbers are everywhere! Turn an evening stroll around the neighborhood into a counting work of art.

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

    Ask children to take a walk in the evening with an adult. Have them look for things to count as they walk, such as stars, trees, buildings, etc. and note or sketch their observations.

  • Step 2

    Read a book aloud, such as "Counting by Night" by Taylor Bills and Lisa Bills or "A Starry Night in the Neighborhood" by Tina Gallo and Jason Fruchter. Ask children to count the images with you. Did anyone see any of the images from the book on their walk?

  • Step 3

    Ask children to draw the images they saw on a piece of dark paper. Encourage them to depict the objects (using the same numbers) that they saw on their walk.

  • Step 4

    Display the creations. Talk about the ways their items can be classified in different groupings and how they can be added together, such as 5 trees + 3 houses = 8 objects.

Standards

MATH: Create models that demonstrate math concepts and attend to precision.

MATH: Describe, compare, quantify, and classify objects by attributes. Sort objects into categories.

Adaptations

Challenge children to make up a new line or two for a song using a standard melody, such as "1,2,3 trees I see many leaves" to the tune of "Baa Baa Black Sheep."

Talk about nocturnal animals such as owls and raccoons and ask what they think the animals do at night.
