Beautiful Snowflakes

Read aloud a snowflake story and ask students to create original snowflakes.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Read a book aloud, such as "Snowflake Day" by Becky Friedman, "Snow" by Uri Shulevitz, or "Snowflake Bentley" by Jacquiline Briggs Martin and Mary Azarian.

  • Step 2

Discuss snow with the students. What do children love about it? Did they know that no two snowflakes are alike? Present some other interesting facts about the snow, such as it starts as a gas, then freezes into a solid, and then melts into a liquid.

  • Step 3

Have students create a snowy scene, perhaps their home or school or community during a snowfall. Have them cut out shapes to create the structures. Ask them to name the shapes they're using - a triangle for the roof, a rectangle for a chimney, etc. Then have them glue the shapes on a piece of construction paper.

  • Step 4

Have the students decorate the scene with fallen snow and snowflakes using crayons and/or glitter markers. Invite them to tell a story about their snowy day.

Standards

LA: Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.

LA: Develop real and imagined narratives.

MATH: Look for and create constructed or natural structures or patterns.

SCI: Ask questions about the features of phenomena observed and conclusions drawn from investigations or models.

SCI: Convey designs through sketches, detailed drawings, or physical models to communicate ideas and solutions.

Adaptations

Create snowflakes by gluing craft sticks on top of each other to form six points, then decorating with glitter glue or markers.

Discuss different things you might see in each season, such as new buds in the spring, colorful leaves in the fall, bright flowers in the summer. Have children create a scene from the season of their choice.
