Counting Critters

Students can count on animals to create colorful scenes.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

What creatures live on a farm? In the sea? In the forest? Have students come up with animals that live in various locations and then decide which they'd like to depict in a math scene.

  • Step 2

Ask students to create a background scene for their creatures. Then have them draw several of animals they chose on a separate piece of paper, cut them out, and glue them onto the background scene, leaving room underneath for aDescription.

  • Step 3

Have students count the critters they attached, then write out the numbers - in numerals, words, or both - under the scene. Older students can write equations with symbols.

Standards

MATH: Create models that demonstrate math concepts and attend to precision.

Math: Describe, compare, quantify, and classify objects by attributes. Sort objects into categories.

SCI: Design pictorial or graphic representations/models that are useful in communicating ideas.

Adaptations

Have students form small groups and create a play about the animals they drew.

Ask students to think of animals that begin with a certain letter, for example, L is for llama, lion, lizard, ladybug... and create a drawing that features them.
