Steps

  • Step 1

Every country has a capital city. Ask students to think about why this is and some of the functions a capital city serves. For example, it is where the seat of government is, it is usually an economic center where the largest businesses are based and which allows it to act as a hub for international trade, it is the place where foreign embassies are located, etc. Have students make a list of several countries and their capitals.

  • Step 2

Have students work in pairs to create a matching game. Ask them to choose several countries and their capitals and then create a pair of cards - one with the name of the country and one with the capital. They might also include an interesting fact on the cards if they choose. They can decorate the backs of the cards with a uniform design and also create a container for the cards by covering a recycled tissue box with decorated paper.

  • Step 3

Play country capital concentration! Place the cards face down and have players take turns turning over cards to try to match a country with its capital.

Standards

SS: People, Places, and Environments: Learn where people and places are located and why they are there. Examine the influence of physical systems such as climate, weather and seasons, and natural resources, such as land and water, on human populations, such as the causes, patterns, and effects of human settlement and migration.

Adaptations

Have students delve deeper into the countries they chose. What is the national language(s)? What is its form of government? What product is it known for? Are there any current challenges the country is facing?
