Design Your Style

Students will represent their interests though cool costumes that they design and use in a play about themselves.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Have children come up with adjectives that describe themselves, their interests, and feelings. Then ask them to develop a story to dramatize for the class. How would they communicate their passions, emotions, and important aspects of themselves?

  • Step 2

Ask each child to create a customized costume out of a recycled paper grocery bag. They can cut a hole at the top and two on the sides for their head and arms. Next ask them to decorate the costume with images that provide insight into who they are.

  • Step 3

Have them break into small groups and collaborate to develop a play they will share with the class. When they are done ask the audience to discuss the emotions and interests that were demonstrated. Were the actors happy? Proud? Sad? Do the actors like flowers? Sports? Music? Video games? Have a class discussion about how acting communicates information and emotions.

Standards

ARTS: Identify ways in which gestures and movement may be used to create or retell a story in guided drama experiences (e.g. process drama, story drama, creative drama).

SEL: Self Awareness: Recognize one's strengths, emotions, and limitations with a well-grounded sense of confidence and purpose.

Adaptations

Have students convey emotions through drawings. How would they depict happy? Sad? Anxious? Delighted? etc.

Read a book such as "The Color Monster: A Story About Emotions" by Anna Llenas or "In My Heart" by Jo Witek and Christine Roussey. Discuss how people can have many feelings at the same time.
