Fantasy Play

Children will engage in a drama and expand their skills when they write a fantasy play. They will then create and design a scene that puts them in a fantastical setting and write a script based on that adventure.

Supplies Needed

Steps

  • Step 1

    Children's minds are expanded by fantasy play, which helps them create their own reality, strengthen social and emotional skills, and develop their self-expression voice. It sparks creative thinking and puts their imagination into action. Ask students to think of a fantasy setting that they would like to visit.

  • Step 2

    Have students create the set in which they insert themselves as a character in the fantasy play. They will write a fantastical plot as a puppet script where they can invite other classmates' characters to join them in acting roles in the script.

  • Step 3

    To form the setting, ask students to create a triorama for a 3D scene. To create the triorama students will fold a square piece of heavy paper or a recycled file folder bringing opposite corners together to form a diagonal line. Then have them cut along one of the folds from the corner to the center. They will then pull one flap back over the other. Have them note which area will be hidden from view when this is done. They should lay the drawing surface flat for ease of decorating the background and base of their triorama. When they are done they will take that one end of the flap and pull it behind the other flap and secure it with tape.

  • Step 4

    They can now complete the scene by decorating construction paper and gluing it into the triorama with images pertaining to their fantasy play. To make the image of themselves they cut a shape out of heavy paper and either draw in their face or add their personal photo. Have them write a script where they are either the narrator or a main character. They can either create additional additional fantasy characters or invite classmates' personal characters to be part of their script.

  • Step 5

    Have them present their stories and trioramas to the class and/or other classes. After the performances have students discuss how putting their imaginations into action expanded their creative thinking and self-expression.

Adaptations

Have students form small groups to collaboratively create and perform a short reality-based play. They can design props and costumes out of found and recycled items. Have a discussion about the differences between fantasy and reality-based drama. Which did they enjoy more and why?

Ask students to think about fantasy books or stories they've read. Ask them to write a paragraph about a character from one of the stories or books and how they might change the end of the story or take the character on a new adventure.
