Field Trip to the Fire Station

A field trip to the local fire station will inspire students to create a drawing related to firefighters and their equipment.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Read a book such as "Firefighters A to Z" by Chris L. Demarest or "I Want to Be a Firefighter" by Dan Liebman, both of which introduce children to the responsibilities of firefighters and the equipment they use. Plan a field trip to the local fire station. Have children discuss their expectations of the visit and prepare some questions they'd like to ask the firefighters. Encourage them to ask about some of the additional duties firefighters perform, such as rescuing trapped animals, responding to accidents, inspecting fire hydrants to make sure they work properly, etc.

  • Step 2

After the field trip, have children draw a picture that highlights some of the sights they saw. This might include the firefighters themselves, their trucks, the equipment they learned about, etc.

  • Step 3

Have children present their drawings to the class and talk about some of the facts they learned about firefighters, their responsibilities, and the tools they use.

Standards

LA: Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking clearly at an understandable pace.

SS: Individuals, Groups, and Institutions: Explore ways in which institutions (including voluntary associations/organizations, health care networks, etc.) are created to respond to changing individual and group needs.

Adaptations

Have the class collaboratively create a fire safety poster. Ask children to cite measures people can take to protect themselves from fires, such as installing smoke alarms, remembering to turn off the stove or oven, keeping a fire extinguisher in a central location, etc. Help them draw and write these on a poster, then post it in the school.

Have children form small groups to create a short play about firefighters and fire safety. They can create props, such as a fire truck made out of recycled cardboard boxes, and perform it in classrooms throughout the school.
