Fun in the Snow

Winter offers so many wonderful sensations: the sight of snow-covered trees, the sound of snow crunching beneath our feet, the taste of hot cocoa and the feeling of warmth as we sit by a fire. Children will explore winter wonders as they create winter artwork.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Read a book with the class such as "When the Snow Falls" by Linda Booth Sweeney and Jana Christy or "The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats. Discuss the activities that the characters enjoyed on a wintery day. Ask them to talk about what they like to do when the snow is falling. Were any of them mentioned in the book? Did the book suggest new activities they'd like to try?

  • Step 2

Have children create a snow creature out of white Model Magic and embellish it with various natural and craft items.

  • Step 3

Have them present their art to the class and tell a story about their character. What is its name? Where does it live? Who are its friends and what do they enjoy doing? Where does it live when winter is over?

Standards

LA: Develop real and imagined narratives.

LA: Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.

Adaptations

Form small groups and have each group create a play featuring their snow creatures.

Challenge students to think of words that are associated with winter, such as snowflakes, frozen, cold, fun, sledding, etc. Collaboratively create a new version of a familiar song by substituting their winter words into the lyrics.
