Fun With String

There are so many ways to use string. You can play cat's cradle, you can tie it around your finger to help you remember something, you can string words together into a sentence, and lots more. Children will have fun making a string collage and composing a silly poem about it.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Read some fun poems to the class. You might choose one from the book "The Endless String" by Tom Hannah and Tess Hannah, a poem by Shel Silverstein, or any others. Have children think of all the places they might find string. Perhaps they'll imagine flying a kite, playing with a yo-yo, or wrapping a package.

  • Step 2

Ask children to create a drawing that incorporates some yarn into it. First they will dip the yarn in washable glue. Then they will press it gently onto a piece of construction paper.

  • Step 3

While the glue is drying, ask each child to compose a silly poem that would connect to their art. After the glue is dry, children will use crayons to add characters, objects, or scenery to their art, incorporating the yarn in interesting ways as part of their drawing. When they present their artwork they will also share their poem with the class.

Standards

LA: Develop real and imagined narratives.

LA: Add drawings or other visual displays to written text to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

Adaptations

Have children make a painting by dipping pieces of yarn in paint and dragging it across the paper. Perhaps it will be a picture of a worm or a snake or it will outline a horizon or some scenery. They can add embellishing features with crayons when the paint is dry.

Have children make stick puppets by drawing faces on craft sticks and gluing on pieces of yarn or string for the hair and other features. Then ask them to form small groups and create a puppet show for their figures.
