Habitat Highlights

Students will explore habitats around the world and create fold-out display of some of their features.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

The word "habitat" comes from the Latin word "habitare," which means "to dwell." Have students learn about the different types of habitats around the world such as forests, oceans, deserts, tundras etc. Then have them choose three or four to learn more about. Where are they located? What flora and fauna live there? Is there a human population there?

  • Step 2

Ask students to look at images of some of the natural wonders found in their chosen habitats. Then have them create a fold-out display of the regions. They can cut out a square for each of the three or four they chose and illustrate the setting or focus on some of the features that would be seen there.

  • Step 3

Next students can cut a large sheet of thick black construction paper into a long rectangle that they will fold into three or four sections. They will glue their decorated squares, one into each folded section, arranged so the black background frames each habitat.

  • Step 4

Have students present their fold-out display and discuss the habitats depicted and some facts about them.

Standards

SCI: Design pictorial or graphic representations/models that are useful in communicating ideas.

SCI: Convey designs through sketches, detailed drawings, or physical models to communicate ideas and solutions.

Adaptations

Habitat loss is one of the greatest threats to the variety of life on the planet. Have students investigate some of its causes, such as polluting the ocean, deforestation, invasive species, etc.

Have students create a travel brochure for a selected region. They can include descriptions of some of the points of interest and illustrations of some of natural beauty seen there.
