Rest Assured

Getting enough sleep and rest is crucial for our physical and mental health. Students will learn about healthy sleep habits and create a poster to remind themselves of it.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Getting enough rest and sleep is essential for health and well-being. Without enough sleep, the brain can't function properly, which impairs our ability to concentrate and think clearly. Proper sleep habits can also help stave off sickness. Have students think about times they may have stayed up too late for various reasons. How did they feel the next day? Did they nod off occasionally, either at school or at home?

  • Step 2

Have students create art that will hang above their bed to remind them of the importance of sleep. They will use dark paper to represent night and will write and illustrate symbols and messages about sleep's benefits. Or they might illustrate some of the activities or rituals they engage in before bedtime to help them fall asleep.

  • Step 3

Encourage students to bring their artwork home and hang it on the ceiling above their bed so they can look up to it before they fall asleep.

Standards

SCI: Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.

SCI: Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.

Adaptations

Have the class collaborate to create a list of good books to read and calming music to listen to before bed. Post the list in the classroom.

Have students investigate the stages of sleep and what happens during each cycle. How are heart rate, breathing, and brain activity affected when you fall asleep? What are dreams and when do occur?
