Sharing the Earth

Children will discuss and illustrate how all living things share the Earth and ways to keep the planet healthy.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Have a discussion about how all living things on the planet are connected because we all share its resources. What do people, plants, and animals need for growth and survival? What can we do to protect the health of our Earth?

  • Step 2

Ask children to create a painting that depicts living creatures sharing the Earth. They might draw the planet and some people, plants, and animals as well as some of the resources we all share, such as water, sunlight, soil, etc.

  • Step 3

Have children present their art and talk about how we can all share the planet with each other.

Standards

SCI: Design pictorial or graphic representations/models that are useful in communicating ideas.

SCI: Understand that events have causes, sometimes simple and sometimes multifaceted.

Adaptations

Read a book such as "I Am Earth" by James McDonald and Rebecca McDonald, "Thank You, Earth" by April Pulley Sayre, or any book that talks about care of our planet. Discuss the many ways we can play a role in keeping it healthy.

Have children illustrate themselves performing actions that help protect the Earth. They might show themselves planting flowers that attract pollinators, recycling items, drinking from a glass rather than a plastic bottle or using a straw, etc.
