The Important Thing about Me

Getting to know classmates is an important activity. Students will compile a classroom book filled with fun and illustrative facts about themselves.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

The beginning of the school year can be exciting but also stressful, especially if students are new to the school or are in a class with students they haven't met before. Explain that this activity will create a reference that will help students get to know one another. Ask children to think of important things they'd like others to know about them.

  • Step 2

Help each child write a short statement on a piece of construction paper beginning with "The important thing about me is..." Ask them to write their name and illustrate themselves on the page. They might use crayons directly on their page, or they might choose to make paper cut-outs shapes to represent parts of the body and glue them to the page.

  • Step 3

Children who finish earlier can collaborate to design the cover of the book. One can design and decorate the background, another can cut shapes to arrange into a person, another can decorate the shapes, another could write the title, etc.

  • Step 4

Have each student share their page, then gather everyone's statements and drawings to compile them into a book form.

  • Step 5

Display the book where children and visitors to the classroom can refer to it.

Standards

LA: Write using words, numbers, and images to inform and explain, share experiences, and create narratives, either fictional or non-fictional.

LA: Add drawings or other visual displays to written text to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

SEL: Self-Awareness: Recognize one’s strengths, emotions, and limitations with a well-grounded sense of confidence and purpose.

Adaptations

Create a collaborative bulletin board called "The Important Things About Our Class." Have children suggest statements such as "We are diverse," "We help each other," "We make mistakes, but that's how we learn," etc., then have them contribute illustrations.

Read a book such as "Piper Chen Sings" by Phillipa Soo, Maris Pasquale Doran, and Qin Leng or "The Pigeon HAS to Go to School!" by Mo Willems. Have a discussion about how it's ok to "feel butterflies" or be nervous and ask children to talk about ways they can overcome their anxiety.
