  • WATERCOLOR TECHNIQUES

Hard Edge Painting - To obtain a deeper, denser tone of color, pre-wet the desired paint with a brushful of water and stir gently. Let sit for 30 seconds. For more translucence, mix paint with water in a plastic mixing tray or plastic plate.

Color Saturation - Dampen paper with a wet sponge or briefly hold paper under water. Lay flat. Spread one color over the entire paper. Tilt the paper to help the color spread evenly.

Color Wash - Decorate a previously painted area by overpainting the dry surface with fine dots or lines. Try creating dots by dipping the tip of a brush handle into paint and then onto the painted surface. This technique is usually more successful if the overpainting is a deeper color than the underpainting.

Overlay - Overlay colors to build up dark colors or to mix hues. Once the bottom layer is dry, brush paint over it. Repeat until desired color effect is reached.

Wet vs Dry - Wet the paper before you begin, so colors will blend quickly and easily, spread evenly, and have a lighter shade. Begin with dry paper for colors that will be darker and won't blend as quickly or easily.

Salt Sprinkles - Sprinkle salt on wet paintings and let dry. Once dry, brush off the remaining salt. You'll have an interesting design because the color concentrates into the areas where the salt crystals form.

Plastic Wrap - While paint is still wet, press crumpled plastic wrap onto the artwork. This technique will leave an interesting texture. Or try laying plastic wrap flat on the wet painted surface. Pull with one strong stroke in one direction. As the wrap moves, it will pull the paint along.

FAQ

  • Crayola® does not produce a product called “watercolor markers.” Since most Crayola markers are water-based, they are frequently referred to as “watercolor markers” or “watercolor pens.” Learn more about Crayola Marker products here.

  • Primary Colors: Primary colors are the foundation for creating other colors. They cannot be created by mixing other colors together. The primary colors are:

    • red
    • blue
    • yellow

Secondary Colors: Secondary colors are created by mixing two primary colors.

    • red + yellow = orange
    • yellow + blue = green
    • blue + red = violet

Tertiary Colors: Tertiary colors are created by mixing primary colors and adjacent secondary colors on the color wheel.

    • red + orange = red orange
    • green + yellow = yellow green
    • blue + violet = blue violet

  • Decorating sculptures made with Crayola® Air-Dry Clay is fun and easy!

    • Paint: Thoroughly dry pieces may be painted with tempera, acrylic, or watercolor paint
    • Markers: Non-Permanent & Washable Markers may not provide optimal coverage if you are coloring a large area of clay since the clay tends to clog the marker nib. Permanent pigment-based markers work well for writing words on the clay.
    • Glitter Glue can be used to decorate dry artwork.

Other product suggestions: pigment-based stamping pads and metallic powder pigment embellishments.

  • Keep designs permanent on fabric and other surfaces when you choose Crayola products with non-washable pigments:

    • Crayola Acrylic Paints, including Acrylic Paint Sticks
    • Crayola Fabric Markers
    • Crayola Fine Point Doodle Markers (ideal for cotton, polyester, leather, & canvas)
    • Crayola Portfolio Series Acrylic Paint
    • Crayola Take Note! Permanent Markers
For added permanency and to fix the color to the fabric, an adult should heat-set the colors before laundering or wearing the garment. Otherwise, washing the fabric before heat-setting, will cause a loss of color intensity.

    To heat-set using an iron
    1.  Set the iron at the hottest setting appropriate for the fabric type.
    2. Cover your work-surface with scrap cloth or rags to prevent unwanted stains.
    3. Turn the fabric inside out, and iron the reverse side of the design with a back and forth motion for 4 minutes.

To heat-set using a clothes dryer, place the item alone in the dryer for 30 minutes on the hottest setting appropriate for the fabric. Do not dry other garments at the same time.

To heat-set using a blow-dryer, use the hottest setting to thoroughly heat the design for 4 minutes.
  • Crayola® Air-Dry clay generally takes 24 hours to dry to the touch and 72 hours to dry completely. Drying times can be altered by environmental conditions and the size of the piece. Thoroughly dry pieces may be painted with tempera, acrylic, or watercolor.
