Slider Word Game

1. Ask students to design a slider, which can be any shape imaginable---a dinosaur, a train, or a trampoline. Students sketch ideas for their sliders using Crayola® Erasable Colored Pencils.
2. To make sliders long enough for a complete sentence, students may need two or more pieces of paper. Use a Crayola Glue Stick to hold pieces together.
3. Students color sliders using Crayola Washable Markers.
4. Students write a sentence. Using a Crayola Fine Tip Marker, write a sentence on the slider with space for at least one missing word (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, or prepositional phrase).
5. Draw two lines, one above the other, where the missing word goes. Fold the paper gently, perpendicular to the lines, and cut slits with Crayola Scissors. Provide adult assistance as needed.
6. Students accent their sliders with Crayola Glitter Glue. Air-dry the glue.
7. Make word strips. Determine the appropriate measurements and have strips cut for students. Be certain to cut long strips of paper slightly narrower than the slider’s slits.
8. Students divide word strips into sections with different background colors. Write one word in each section to complete the sentence written on the sliders.
9. Insert the word strips from the back of the slider through the slits. Students are now ready to go sliding!

LA: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade level topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.

LA: With guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing.

LA: Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification.

MATH: Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.

VA: Use art materials and tools in a safe and responsible manner.

VA: Use visual structures of art to communicate ideas.

Working in small groups, ask a single student to share his Slider with one sentence (e.g., The scary bug chewed on the leaf.). Select a second student to illustrate that sentence. The first student then adjusts his Slider so that his sentence is altered (e.g., The colorful bug jumped on the leaf.) . Have a third student illustrate that sentence, and so on. Compare and contrast the various illustrations.

Students use their sentence sliders as a starting point for writing an original short story. Illustrate significant scenes from the story.

Use this same technique to create a math game. Instead of writing a sentence on the slider, create addition and/or subtraction problems. Use a number strip to locate the correct answer. (Ex., 4 + 5 - 3 = 6)
