  • Paper Trimmer
  • Stapler and Staples

Steps

  • Step 1

With the help of an adult cut uniform thin strips of paper in various shades of pink, red, and purple with a paper trimmer.

  • Step 2

    For Vertical Heart Chain:

Take several strips of construction paper and fold each one exactly in half to create a "V" shape.

  • Step 3

Take one folded strip and curve the two open ends inward toward each other to form a heart shape.

  • Step 4

Place the "point" (the fold) of a second strip between the two curved ends of the first heart.

  • Step 5

Staple the ends of the first heart and the base of the second strip together.

  • Step 6

Continue curving the ends of the new strip and stapling a subsequent strip into it until you reach your desired length.

  • Step 7

    Side by Side Heart Garland:

Take a single strip of paper, curve the ends together to meet, and staple them to create a simple heart shape.

  • Step 8

Lay two completed hearts side-by-side with one "pointed" up and the other down.

  • Step 9

Staple the hearts together where their widest "rounded" sides touch.

  • Step 10

Continue adding and stapling hearts in a row to create a horizontal garland.

  • Step 11

    Interlocking Garland:

Form a heart shape by curving the ends of a strip together and stapling them together to form a base loop.

  • Step 12

Thread a new strip of paper through the center of the previously completed heart.

  • Step 13

Curve the ends of the threaded strip together to form a new heart and staple the ends.

  • Step 14

Repeat this process, threading each new strip through the heart before it to create a linked-chain effect.

CIY Staff Tips

Use your imagination and create fun patterns using these other techniques:

Ombre Effect: Arrange your strips in a gradient from dark purple to light pink before stapling to create an ombre look.

Wreath Alternative: Staple the side-by-side hearts (Garland 2)  into a large circle rather than a straight line to create a lightweight heart wreath for a door or window.

Patterned Paper: Mix solid construction paper with patterned cardstock or glitter paper to add texture and visual interest to the chains.

Nested Hearts: Place a smaller strip inside a larger one and staple them together at the base to create double-layered, "nested" hearts.
