Chanukah Cards With Quilling

Create colorful and cheerful Chanukah cards using the quilling technique.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Discuss the holiday of Chanukah. What are its origins? Who celebrates it and how?

  • Step 2

Have students fold colorful paper to create a card. Then have them choose another color of paper and cut it into narrow strips. These will be used to create the quilling - a traditional craft technique that uses rolled paper coils.

  • Step 3

Ask students to choose symbols that represent the holiday, such as a dreidel or a menorah. Have them roll each of the narrow strips into a tight coil. Next ask them to pinch the coils into shapes, such as rectangles for candles, ovals for flames, etc. Have them arrange and glue the quill art to the card and use markers to add messages or other decorations.

  • Step 4

Encourage students to present the cards to family, friends, or acquaintances who celebrate Chanukah.

Standards

ARTS: Explore and invent art-making techniques and approaches.

SS: Culture: Create, learn, share, and adapt to culture.

SS: Individual Development and Identity: Examine various institutions that affect one's life and influence people's thinking and how they advocate for ideas they believe in.

Adaptations

Encourage students to make and bring Chanukah cards to a local nursing home for the Jewish residents or to a synagogue to be delivered to people who have difficulty getting out of their homes.

The art of paper quilling dates back to the 15th century and maybe earlier. Have students investigate its origins and view some samples of these artistic creations.
