Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Steps

  • Step 1

Have students talk about some of their winter holiday traditions. Ask if they have ever made hand-decorated gift bags to distribute seasonal treats.

  • Step 2

Have students design a holiday gift bag that features a winter holiday. They can draw traditional symbols on paper lunch bags (preferably white or light colored) and use glitter glue for features and messages.

  • Step 3

Ask the parent organization or a parent volunteer to provide the class with seasonal treats so students cam fill their bags with edibles or small trinkets to present to a friend or loved one.

Standards

SS: Culture: Create, learn, share, and adapt to culture.

SS: Culture: Through experience, observation, and reflection, identify elements of culture as well as similarities and differences among cultural groups across time and place.

SS: Individual Development and Identity: Describe factors important to the development of personal identity and the context of identity within families, peer or affinity groups, schools, communities, and nationalities.

Adaptations

Ask students to decorate and fill treat bags that represent other seasonal holidays, and have them delivered to a community organization or nursing home.

Have students learn about the traditions of other winter holidays and incorporate those symbols into the gift bag they are decorating for a community-bound gift. Since they won't know what the receipent celerates, ask them to create bags representing several different holidays.
