Clever Crows

Crows are very intelligent animals. Children will learn about them and create a crow out of cut or torn paper.

Lesson Plan

Read a book to the class such as "Six Crows" by Leo Lionni or "Clever Crow" by Chris Butterworth and Olivia Lomenech Gill. Discuss some interesting facts about

  • Step 2

Ask students to make a crow out of black construction paper. They can either cut or tear the body, wings, and beak. They can also cut or tear other features, such as eyes and legs, out of a different colored paper. After the pieces are created, have them glue them together.

  • Step 3

Ask students to present their crows and tell a story about the clever things this little bird will do.

Standards

LA: Add drawings or other visual displays to written text to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

LA: Develop real and imagined narratives.

SCI: Describe what living organisms have in common (eating, breathing, growing, and reproducing) and distinguish them from non-living things.

Adaptations

Crows have mythological significance in Native American culture. Discuss some of their symbolic meanings; for example, they act as messengers, they guide and protect, etc. Recount a crow legend, such as The Story of Rainbow Crow about a crow that sacrifices its beauty and voice in order to bring fire back to Earth to save other animals from freezing.

Have children form small groups and create a play for their crows. They can glue the crow they created onto a craft stick and then act out their play as a stick puppet show.
