Comfy and Cozy

Children will think about a place where they feel comfortable and cozy, then depict it in a drawing.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Ask children to think about a place where they feel comfortable and cozy. Perhaps it's in a room in their home, a comfy chair at grandma's house, sitting on a park bench on a pleasant day, or somewhere else. NOTE to teachers: Please be sensitive to any responses and honor that some kids "feel at home" in places that aren't their home.

  • Step 2

Ask children to create a drawing of this special place. They can include some other items that help them feel comfortable, such as a cuddly pet, a best friend, a stuffed animal, a beloved blanket, etc. Adding a small amount of water to areas of marker drawings can give the image a soft, watercolor effect.

  • Step 3

Ask them to present their art. If they are comfortable discussing why they chose the location, provide time for that sharing.

Standards

SEL: Self-Awareness: Understand one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior across contexts.

Adaptations

Humor is a wonderful way to increase a feeling of comfort. Have children look at examples of funny non-standard homes such as Antti Lovag's "Bubble Palace in France; Matti Suuronen's "Futuro House," which looks like a spaceship, in Finland; or Javier Senosiain's "Casa Orgánica in Mexico, which is covered in greenery and resembles a shark with its jaws open. Ask if they would feel comfortable and cozy in this house.

Ask children to think about the phrase "Home is where the heart is." What does it mean to them? Does a home have to be a house or where you live? What are the elements that make people feel at home in many different places?
