Count on Your Alien

Count on an alien to help students practice reading and counting.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Have students cut paper into an equal number of small and larger sized pieces. Ask students to generate a list of at least 10 body parts that would go on an alien, such as eyes, antennae, legs, teeth, etc. and write one of these on each of the larger cards. Have them write the numerals from one to 10 on the smaller cards. There should be enough for each student to have one pair, so you might have to double up on the parts and numbers.Turn the cards face down, keeping the body parts separate from the numbers.

  • Step 2

Have each student pick one body part and one number card. Ask them to draw an alien that includes the number of body parts that they picked.

  • Step 3

Display the alien drawings on one part of a table and place the cards on another another. Have students take turns picking up a number and body part card and finding the drawing with those included in the art.

Standards

MATH: Create models that demonstrate math concepts and attend to precision.

Math: Describe, compare, quantify, and classify objects by attributes. Sort objects into categories.

Adaptations

Ask students how they would interact with an alien who decided to visit their school. What would they like to know about the alien's home planet? What games would they play together and why?

Have students work in small groups to create and act out a story about an alien.
