Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Oaxaca is a state in the south of Mexico and is a leading producer of the country's handcrafted items. Have students learn about the history and people of the region and explore some of the artwork it is known for. One prominent example is the "alebrije," a brightly colored sculpture of fantastic creatures. Ask students to look at images of some of these sculptures and learn about their origin.

  • Step 2

Have students choose a creature to create on paper. They might want to look up some of the animals and fantasy creatures featured in Mexican art and their symbolism. For example, armadillos represent strength, hummingbirds represent hopefulness, etc.

  • Step 3

Students can begin by sketching an outline of their animal on construction paper and then adding color and details. Encourage them to use vibrant colors and patterns that represent Mexican folk art.

  • Step 4

Have them present their animals and talk about their symbolism in Mexican culture.

Standards

ARTS: Speculate about processes an artist uses to create a work of art.

SS: Culture: Create, learn, share, and adapt to culture.

Adaptations

Have students create an alebrije, a brightly colored sculpture of a mythical creature featured in much Oaxacan art, out of Model Magic.

Oaxaca is widely regarded as the culinary capital of Mexico. Ask students to explore some of the foods it's known for such as its five mole (MOH-lay) sauces (an iconic Oaxacan staple); tejate, a traditional drink made from maize, cacao, and flowers; and caldo de piedra, a soup that is prepared in a stone bowl and served in a gourd.
