Fabulous Physical Fitness

Keeping active is important for physical and mental health. Students will discuss activities they enjoy and create a drawing to promote the benefits of exercise.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Physical activity has short- and long-term benefits. It can help you feel better (mentally and physically), function better, and sleep better, to name a few. Have a discussion about some of these and other benefits such as how it can reduce health risks, increase life expectancy, and strengthen your bones and muscles. Ask students to talk about the kinds of physical activity they engage in. Perhaps they're on a sports team, ride their bike with friends, swim at a community center, or anything else.

  • Step 2

Ask students to choose an activity they enjoy and depict it in a drawing. They should research fun facts about this exercise or sport. They may want to add a message to their drawing as well.

  • Step 3

Have students present their art to the class and talk about how it makes them feel when they engage in physical activity.

Standards

SCI: Convey designs through sketches, detailed drawings, or physical models to communicate ideas and solutions.

SEL: Responsible Decision Making: Reflect on one's role to promote personal, family, and community well-being.

Adaptations

A balanced diet is one that includes foods from all food groups and contains the necessary nutrients to promote health. Have students identify the food groups and the proportions needed of each group. Ask them to plan a sample menu for a breakfast, lunch, and dinner that will include important nutrients.

Ask students to research the science behind exercise and mental health. For example, increased oxygen saturation helps intellectual and physical performance. and exercise lowers stress hormones and increases endorphins (a hormone associated with relieving pain and stress level).
