Greek Mythology Characters

Students can claim "It's Greek to me!" as they learn about and create a 3-D display of characters from Greek mythology.

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

    Have students research Greek mythology and learn about some of the stories and principal characters. Have them learn about how some of the stories evolved and how they've inspired art and writing all over the world in modern times. Ask students to select six characters or stories from their research to depict on a cube-like structure.

  • Step 2

    To make the 3-D shape have students will draw six circles on a piece of paper. Within each circle ask them to draw a square whose corners all touch the rim of the circle. Then ask them to fill each square with a drawing that depicts a character and/or a scene from one of the Greek myths. Now ask them to cut out the circles.

  • Step 3

    To assemble the pieces ask students to fold the lines forming each square upward. Then have them begin attaching the circles together by gluing the flaps together with the illustrations and writing facing outward.

  • Step 4

    Have students present their art and talk about the characters and the scenes depicted.

Adaptations

While there have been changes to the Greek language since ancient times, the basic structure has actually changed very little. Have students find out about how Greek has influenced virtually all Indo-European languages, including English. Ask them to find some words that are rooted in Greek, such as acrobat, democracy, sarcasm, and many others.

Challenge students to write a story that gives a Greek myth a modern twist. Perhaps a modern Medusa has a head of unruly hair instead of snakes, and this makes her mean and cranky. How might Perseus react to this?
