Seed Pods

Students will learn about seed pods and their functions, then create a replica out of Model Magic.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Seed pods are produced by plants and trees and play an essential role in seed dispersion and plant reproduction. Have students explore their functions. How do they develop? What are some of the mechanisms that help them disperse seeds (such as sticking to animals, bursting open after a loud noise, etc.)? What is the size of the Coco de Mer palm tree pod, the largest seed pod in the world? What other functions can they serve besides creating new plants? Ask students to research some of the seed pods that might be found in your region.

  • Step 2

Ask students to look at images of different types of seed pods. Then have them create a model of one out of Model Magic. They can blend colors of the modeling compound to form green and shades of blue-green and use markers and glitter glue to add additional colors to the seed pod.

  • Step 3

When their work is dry, have students present their model and discuss the type of seed pod they created and how it disperses its seeds.

Standards

SCI: Describe what living organisms have in common (eating, breathing, growing, and reproducing) and distinguish them from non-living things.

SCI: Design pictorial or graphic representations/models that are useful in communicating ideas.

Adaptations

Have students read a book such as "From Seed to Plant" by Gail Gibbons or "How Plants Grow" by Dona Herweck Rice. Then ask them to diagram and illustrate the stages of growth and parts of a plant.

Invite a botanist, plant nursery worker, or another person with expertise about plant cultivation to speak to the class, either in person or via video, about how plants and trees grow. Have students prepare questions in advance of the presentation.
