Windblown

This quick and easy lesson inspired by the book Windblown by Edouard Manceau is the perfect lesson for little ones to play with shapes and imagination.

  • Grade 1
    Kindergarten
  • 30 Minutes or Less
  • Directions

    1. This lesson can be done using the same shapes as the one in the book as it suggests at the end of the story or different ones to create a new palette.
    2. Read Windblown by Edouard Manceau with the students. Discuss how the author made his illustrations (simple lines and a set of shapes that never changed in terms of color or size). Make a list of the pieces the author uses in the book to create his animals. Ask students to determine what shapes they resemble most. As a class students can discuss attributes of these shapes.
    3. Provide students with math manipulative shapes (i.e. Tangram blocks, attribute blocks, pattern blocks) at their desks or tables. Give them a few minutes to experiment making different items with the manipulatives. Encourage students to flip, turn, rotate and stack their pieces to create interesting compositions.
    4. Hand out white paper and sets of pre-cut shapes to students. Encourage students to try three or four arrangements before using their glue sticks to firmly attach their pieces in their desired arrangement.
    5. Have students use Crayola® Ultra Clean Markers to add simple lines to complete the drawing aspect of their creation.
    6. Optionally, have students create a sentence to accompany their art (ex: Thank-you for the pieces wind, I made a….)

    LA: Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to provide additional detail.

    VA: Understand there are different responses to specific artworks.

    VA: Use art materials and tools in a safe and responsible manner.

    VA: Use different media, techniques, and processes to communicate ideas, experiences, and stories.

  • Adaptations

    Research famous artists which use predominantly shapes in their art (Wassily Kandinsky, Joan Miro, Claude Tousignant) and create an art piece inspired by their work.

    Read similar books that use shapes in their illustrations like Caldecott honoree Shape by Shape by Suse MacDonald, Mouse Shapes by Ellen Stoll Walsh, Skippyjon Jones Shape Up by Judy Schachner, A Circle Here, A Square There by David Diehl. Compare and contrast the stories and their illustrations.

    Expand to use the math manipulatives in different game/work stations around the room. Try activities like sorting, cover the shape, Honeycomb Beat (Teachers Pay Teachers), counting, etc.
