  • Glue
  • Markers
  • Cardboard
  • Circular Object
  • String

Steps

  • Step 1

For each Paper Spinner, trace 2 circles around the bottom of a large circular object onto construction paper.

  • Step 2

Draw designs inside the circles with markers and colored pencils.

  • Step 3

    Cut out circles with scissors.

  • Step 4

Place a circle onto a piece of scrap cardboard and trace.

  • Step 5

Ask an adult to help cut out the cardboard disc.

  • Step 6

Attach a circle to each side of the cardboard disc with glue stick.

  • Step 7

Ask an adult to make two holes in the center of the cardboard disc, about 1/2" apart.

  • Step 8

Cut a piece of string approximately 30” long.

  • Step 9

Thread string ends through the holes in the cardboard disc. Tie together.

  • Step 10

Center the disc on the string. Hold the ends and “flip” the disc repeatedly (like a jump rope) to wind up the spinner. Quickly stretch the string to watch it swirl and twirl!

CIY Staff Tips

  • You can trace any large circular object you have available; we used an empty coffee tin.
  • Try designing your spinner with other art tools like Crayola Crayons or Crayola Washable Paint!
  • To create a themed spinner, try using different color combinations. Red, white and blue for a patriotic flare. Pastels to welcome spring. Red and green for a little Christmas spirit. Blue and white for a festive Hanukkah. Black, red and green for a bright Kwanzaa. The possibilities are endless!
