Crayola® produces nearly 3 billion crayons each year, an average of twelve million daily. That's enough to circle the globe 6 times! In addition to making crayons, Crayola makes 600 million Crayola Colored Pencils, 465 million markers, 110 million sticks of chalk, 9 million Silly Putty eggs, and 1.5 million jars of paint. Crayola® Crayons are made primarily from paraffin wax and color pigment. This process is the same for all Crayola Crayon colors. The paraffin wax is melted and mixed together with pre-measured amounts of color pigments.

We purchase the powder pigments and either use individual colors or mix the pigments to produce the many colors of Crayola crayons. The hot wax mixture is poured into molding machines. In about four to seven minutes, the crayons cool and become solid. We manufacture almost 3 billion crayons each year.

Crayola® Crayons are made primarily from paraffin wax and color pigment. We do not recommend making candles using Crayola Crayons. They have not been tested or approved for this type of use. We do not recommend the use of traditional Crayola art products for intentional direct skin contact. Products designed for face and skin painting require specific testing and approval for this purpose.

However, we think you will love the Crayola Face & Body Crayons! These non-toxic crayons allow you to color right on your skin. They clean easily off the skin with soap and water. Check for them at a major retail store near you.

Most of our color names are taken from a book called "Color: Universal Language and Dictionary of Names," which was published by the U.S. Bureau of Standards. We use this reference guide because everyone sees and expresses color differently. Using the Universal dictionary as a base, we can refer to a standard color system and color names. Many crayon names are also borrowed from traditional artists' paints. In addition, we have asked consumers, through various promotions, to help name crayon colors.
