Get To Know Me

How well do students know their classmates? This fun get-to-know-me activity is great for the beginning of a school year.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

  • Coffee Filter(s)
  • Paper
  • Recycled Plastic Containers
  • Ribbon

Steps

  • Step 1

The beginning of a new school year offers an opportunity to get to know new people. It might bring together students who have been in different classes, and there might be students who have just moved to the area. Have students write clues about themselves on slips of paper, perhaps a hobby they enjoy, a game they play, a song they like, or something else. Then ask them to put the strips of paper in a recycled cup such as an individual snack holder or a washed and dried single-serving yogurt container.

  • Step 2

Have students make a lid for their container out of a decorated coffee filter. They can use markers to make designs on damp coffee filters to give them a tie-dye look. While the filters are drying ask them to create some miniature objects that represent some of their likes or interests out of Model Magic, then place them in their cups.

  • Step 3

When the lids are dry have students tie them around their cups. Every day a students can pick two or three cups to open. Have someone read the slips within and see if classmates can figure out who created it.

Standards

SEL: Self-Awareness: Recognize one’s strengths, emotions, and limitations with a well-grounded sense of confidence and purpose.

Adaptations

Ask students to form pairs, preferably two people who don't know each other well, and interview each other. Then have the pair introduce each other to the rest of the class.

Read a book about friendship and inclusion such as "The Invisible Boy" by Trudy Ludwig and Patrice Barton or "The Boy at the Back of the Class" by Onjali Q. Rauf. Discuss how learning about people's differences and showing kindness can bring people together and create a rich and productive environment.
