Go Team!

Cheering for a team is beneficial to both the players and the fans. Students will create a pennant to root for a win.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Cheering provides benefits for both players and spectators. Being a sports fan and rooting for your team can boost self-esteem, make you happier, and give you a sense of belonging with other fans. When players hear fans cheering for them it can invigorate them and motivate them to match the energy of the crowd. Ask students to discuss feelings they've had when they've played a sport for spectators or cheered on their team from the stands.

  • Step 2

Have students choose a team to support. Perhaps it's one at their school or a team they follow in the news. Ask them to create a pennant for the team. They can cut a triangle out of a large piece of paper, then decorate it with a simple message and perhaps an illustration of the team's mascot or other items associated with the sport. Encourage them to use the team colors.

  • Step 3

When the pennant is complete have students glue the wide end of the triangle to a cardboard tube, perhaps a recycled roll of wrapping paper or paper towels. They can then decorate the tube as well. Now they're ready to root on their team!

Standards

SEL: Responsible Decision-Making: Reflect on one's role to promote personal, family, and community well-being.

Adaptations

Encourage students to attend at least one school sports event and cheer for the team. Have them reflect on how it made them feel and if they thought it inspired the players.

Ask students to pick a professional team to research. What is its win/loss ratio? Which players have the most time on the field? What are some of the players' statistics (batting averages, assists, yards gained, etc.)?
