Animal Attributes

Students use descriptive words to illustrate animal drawings.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Review the meaning of adjectives. Practice by choosing an object and asking students to brainstorm a list of adjectives that could describe it.

  • Step 2

Have each student choose an animal and write a list of adjectives that could describe the animal and its habitat.

  • Step 3

Ask students to draw a colorful outline of the animal in its habitat. Have them fill in the outline with adjectives that describe it, and then write descriptive words about the habitat around the animal.

Standards

LA: Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.

LA: Write using words, numbers, and images to inform and explain, share experiences, and create narratives, either fictional or non-fictional.

Adaptations

Read a book that describes animals such as "Hairy, Scary, Ordinary" by Brian P. Cleary or "A Is for Angry: An Animal and Adjective Alphabet" by Sandra Boynton.

Challenge students to write an adjective in a way that conveys its meaning. For example, "sunny" could be written in bright orange or red and have rays coming out of it, or "happy" could be written using lots of little smiley faces to make the letters.
