Book Scenes

Students will recall a scene from a book or story and bring it to life in a collage.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Choose a book to read to the class. It might be a classic such as "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak, "Frederick" by Leo Lionni, or "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss. Or it could be a current book the class wants to explore. When the read-aloud ends, ask children to recall memorable scenes from the book.

  • Step 2

Have children form small groups and choose a scene from the book to depict in a collage. One student can draw and cut out shapes that will form the characters, another can decorate the background, etc. When the pieces are decorated and assembled the students can glue them onto the background paper. They will then write some questions that the characters might ask each other or that they would like to ask the characters who are in the scene.

  • Step 3

When their collages are done, have children come to the front of the class and present their questions that they will ask classmates to answer, as if they were the characters in the scene.

Standards

LA: Add drawings or other visual displays to written text to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

LA: Analyze how and why individuals, events, or ideas develop and interact over the course of a story.

Adaptations

Have students make up an original story that involves the same characters who were in the book you had read aloud. Have them illustrate a scene from them story extension or totally new tale. When they present their art they will explain the new story to classmates.

Lean into the back-and-forth nature of inquiry by having students pretend the characters can ask them questions. What would Frederick or The Lorax like to know about the students, your school, or the community?
